What I Learned About UX by Rebuilding My Website
The past month has really pushed me in ways I wasn’t anticipating. Between building my website, running a social media campaign, and editing content, I got a very clear sense of how tied together user experience, communication, and emotional engagement really are. Those aren’t just ‘creative’ skills; they are business ‘toolsets’ that I now feel more confident using as I move forward in my career. The other big one has been learning how to edit more effectively with Premier Pro. I have used the program before but I have reawaken the ability to use editing to tell a story. And that just came as a lesson to me in video content is not about visuals; it’s about building emotion. If I’m going to get people in the future to care about my business, then that’s what my content’s got to do. These are skills that will enable me to create marketing and advertising material, ranging from promotional videos to short social advertising content that cuts through to an audience. Another surge area was in UX design. Rebuilding my site proved to be quite a climb especially combining all the breakpoints for various devices. Trying to make a site look good on desktop, on a tablet, and on a phone is a nightmare when you're doing it from scratch. But once I made every element flow as well as snap into place, the results were beautiful. It's one of those things people not always take heed of until it's wrong, now that I learned doing it right, I understand how much impact they deliver. UX means it is not only about making something look good but make the whole experience feel right. Sure, the program might have had a focus in sports marketing but I’ve found crossover into the world of logistics which proved to be very beneficial. From Nic Benson, during my interview, I was able to see how fast things are changing in the industry. The biggest insight I received is this: to make it in logistics, or anywhere really, you need to move faster than the industry itself. That your communication systems and information representation must be always getting better. ‘Good,’ design is perceived as a sort of secondary concern that still often finds its way even into operations-dominant fields such as logistics. Within the next four months, on the other hand, I intend to secure funding to redesign my business website with more robust design systems and better UX practices, and a more strategic outlook. It won’t just be a website; it’ll be a tool that supports my growth. I plan to apply these lessons at my current job by becoming a stronger communicator. I want to create better visual aids to help new hires onboard more quickly and feel more connected with the systems we use. In the end, this project wasn’t about content creation. It was about learning to turn content into an experience; something that educates, inspires, and drives action. That’s the kind of creator, leader, and business owner I’m working to become.
